Biography
Robert and Lucy Freebird, the parents of Dren Freebird, were proud owners of Paradise Dojo. Located in Blue Mountains, Jamaica, the lovebird couple selfishly gave back to the community by sharing their knowledge of Kyokushin karate to anyone who was pure of heart and willing to learn. Both Robert and Lucy spent time abroad in their youth learning from Master Yoshimi in Tokyo, Japan where they learned to reduce the spirit of self denial, principles of humility, respect and the true virtue of martial arts.
Those were the good old days.
Political unrest had spread amongst the island as the government weakened and economy plundered to recorded lows. Never to be one who worried himself about worldly matters, Robert ignored the warning signs. The rich were getting richer as the poor were getting poorer. Throughout the mountain, gangs offered their protection from other gangs by way of extortion. “You pay us 40% of your profit and we promise you that no harm will befall you,” promised the gang leaders. Majority complied but the select few who didn’t found danger lurking among their doorsteps.
Robert and Lucy turned down their many advances. Not only could they not afford to give away such funds but never would they finance a gang and empower them to create more violence. On one ill-fated evening, Paradise Dojo was attacked. The gang blocked off the doors and held guns pointing towards the windows blocking any escape from the dojo’s as they set the establishment up in flames, trapping his parents inside in the process.
The story is in the ashes.
Dren Freebird, who at the juvenal age of two was too young to remember the events, nor does he know the details explained previously. Regardless of early trials and tribulations fate would see to it that he had a future. In their will, his parents dictated that if anything were to happen to them he would be sent to be raised by their Kyokushin master, Shinya Yoshimi who had recently relocated from Tokyo, Japan to Vancouver, Canada.
Shinya Yoshimi had no knowledge of the passing of Robert and Lucy Freebird until Dren was delivered to Tobikan Judan Dojo in the late hours of November 5th 1992, a child of the night. Nonetheless, Master Shinya Yoshimi accepted Dren with open arms and adopted him into the family. Dren Yoshimi grew up under the tutelage of Master Shinya and his slightly older sister(by one day) Yoshiko Yoshimi aka (Yo~Yo). By the age of 11 Dren and Yo~Yo shared an unnatural obsession for wrestling. Saturday morning cartoons were replaced with International Wrestling tapes and after school extra circular activities consisted of practicing suplexes and hip tosses.
Master Shinya picked up on this interest that his children enjoyed so immensely and transformed his karate dojo into a wrestling dojo where Dren and Yoshiko spent countless days perfecting their technique. Hours of practice and guidance allowed Dren and Yo~Yo to implement a martial art style into their wrestling. The two prodigies had become something of local legends by the time they were teens as people from around the city ventured to the dojo just to get a glimpse of their training matches. As a graduation present to his children, Master Shinya graciously gave ownership of the dojo to Dren and Yoshiko as he graceful retired. Not wanting to stay spend their lives in Vancouver, Dren and Yoshiko sent out promo tapes which they recorded in the dojo to anyone who would accept them into their promotion.
